Monti's La Casa Vieja Steakhouse Tempe, Arizona August 2008
This placard tells the history of a safe that sits outside Monti's restaurant, which is housed in "[Tempe's] original pioneer home and the oldest continuously occupied structure in the Phoenix metropolitan area"...
"Beginning in 1871-this safe withstood the raveges of time impervious to [illegible]-flood, tornado and tampering-until one night in 1970, when a gang of grimy thugs smashed their way into Monti's la Casa Vieja and the Safe - then fled into the darkness with their ill-gotten gains...THEY HAD NO RESPECT!" tricherson posted a photo:

Finally getting around to the rest of my pictures from the August photostroll. This one was taken in a construction walkway near the new Metro station. I'm not sure who the man is, but I wonder if the original artist appreciates the additions to his/her work. Tracy27 posted a photo:
My partner Susie and I pruned this velvet mesquite for our Desert Landscaping class. When we started, it had limbs drooping all the way to the ground, a lot of dead/dying lower branches, and it was crowding out some trees next to it. We crawled on in there and fixed it up good. - luz - posted a photo:

Thought I'd give this photo a look in black and white. I think I like it better since I haven't given either one a lot of editing. CMO'Neill posted a photo:

I managed to record a few videos during the show. I'd gotten nervous about openly recording the show, not because cameras weren't allowed, but because some artists are very particular about video being taken at their concerts. I wasn't sure of Chan's feelings so I decided to capture a few, short clips and completely hide the camera afterward. During my favorite clip she approaches our side and directly gestures into my camera while I record. Later she commented about her wish that the security could remove the barrier gate in front of us. I felt more comfortable but decided I'd gotten plenty for my own memories. Crystal Dawn posted a photo:
Chan has this amazingly deep, soulful voice that echos right through you and her style isn't like most others. She moves freely, completely feeling the music, her hands, arms, and legs moving fluidly. She sometimes jumped or knelt on the the stage and you could see the emotion in her eyes and facial expressions.
We were lucky to find the spot we had because it seemed to be one of her favorite spots (on our side) to linger. She would often approach the very edge, directly in front of me, just inches away and lean in towards us so close that I could hear the raspyness of her voice aside from the microphone. And when she was there, she had a habit of locking eyes with the people in front of her and when she did, you could feel this chill as if she were singing directly to you. Finally, after we had been at the Marquee for nearly two hours, Chan (pronounced Sean) Marshall (Cat Power) took the stage.
I'd given the camera to Jenny, who is an avid photographer, to snap a few pictures from her perspective. Though dark, there's something about this particular picture that I really love. Crystal Dawn posted a photo:
The end of the show was my favorite part of the night. It wasn't because I wanted the show to end or because of the two obnoxious scary fans behind us (who commented several times, loudly, "It sure would be nice to lean. Oh, you can lean on me. NO! I still wouldn't be happy.") pressing close into our ribs, but because of Jenny, Julie's younger sister. Jenny's birthday was last weekend and as part of her present, we bought her ticket for the show. Chan happens to be Jenny's favorite female vocalist so being up front, locking eyes with Chan herself, just inches away meant the world to her. She sang every word to every song and it seems like Chan noticed. When the last song ended, Chan disappeared into her dressing room (off to the side of the stage, which we could also see) and emerged with a handful of t-shirts to toss into the audience. She took her place on stage, closed her eyes, and threw several white shirts blindly into the crowd but kept a black around her shoulder. She then walked in front of us, bent closer, and directly handed Jenny the final t-shirt: the black shirt she'd kept over her shoulder.
And all Jenny had wanted from that night was the set-list. :) |
